So do five year olds; belief in Santa and the Tooth Fairy.
The Green Party web site bears the statement “A modern Ireland needs a modern energy supply. The Green Party believes renewable energy will reduce costs for households and businesses, cut fossil fuel imports and help combat climate change. Smart technology will lead to employment opportunities, greater efficiency and reduced consumption”. See https://greenparty.ie/policies/energy-2/
The world unfortunately always had, and always will have, realities. If the good citizens of Ireland wish to vote in Green representation, they must accept the consequences of cherishing “beliefs” in preference to reality.
This includes being overcharged by the very Minister who at the same time articulates the belief that renewable energy will reduce costs for households and businesses. The Common Agricultural Policy CAP aims to ensure a secure food supply for citizens, while protecting the environment. The factors of production are 1) land 2) labour and 3) capital. Land supply is largely through inheritance and also through the market to a lesser extent. Land requires maintenance best carried out in the course of agriculture. The incremental value added to food between farm gate and high street leaves a very small margin for farmers. When farm prices are good, the farmer invests and increases production in the products selling well , while reducing production in those not selling well. If farmers concentrate on (say lamb) that increase in supply can cause prices to fall below the cost of production. This results in a pendulum effect, a scarcity of lamb and a glut of another product causing chaos. Land use could change to (say forestry) depriving citizens of its food production capacity. Most machinery is idle except for occasional seasonal usage. In Ireland, food leaving the farm gate forms the raw material for a massive processing and export industry which itself requires a steady supply of inputs.

Farmers are part of a state guided control system to ensure the Irish brand is kept in the premium position among consumers world wide. The small farmer may be inefficient in terms of scale, but he/she is highly efficient in the area of quality, environment and animal welfare. There is not only legal control but emotional support by farmers in the overall effort to promote Irish food. Consumers regard the quality of the food they and their families eat in terms of animal welfare, strict control of medicines, nitrates, chemicals, husbandry and hygiene. Subsidies provide the vehicle to ensure and enforce standards. In reality, the subsidy comprises the only profit when costs are paid. Farming requires large spending of inputs which supports jobs in retailing, financial and state administration, Food exports provide vital revenue for society. A by product is a peasant countryside for native and tourists to share. It is actually good value for money, but the key to its acceptability is that there is a product, real tangible grain, vegetables and meat. The problem with electricity is that it is not tangible, cannot be made the subject of a stock take and measured as an asset. There is no recognised method to measure the value of wind energy on the system, just guesswork. There is no underlying product. Last week it was discovered the in 2010, the Irish government transferred part of the cost of electricity for industry to domestic consumers in order to encourage industry. The minister responsible was Green Party leader Eamon Ryan.Val Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03248166816744009791noreply@blogger.com
